SIMONE LEIGH

BORN 1967, Chicago, USA
LIVES&WORKS New York, USA

Simone Leigh creates sculptures inspired by vernacular architecture and the female body, featuring different materials and processes typical of the art traditions of Africa and the African diaspora. Her creative process is based on an ethical tension that looks at the history of collectiveness, with particular attention credited to black women’s communities. Video and performance are the expressive avenues chosen to speak of black feminist theory, whose lacunae are filled in by the artist using her own inspiration.
