An artist, author, and director, Sophia Al-Maria grew up in America and in Qatar before moving to Cairo to study comparative literature at the American University. Her sources of inspiration are apparently very diverse, and influence Al-Maria’s multidisciplinary artmaking to include pop culture, anime, Arabic poetry, science fiction. She works primarily with film and text, and her latest works focus on themes such as technology-driven isolation, consumerism as a neo-religion, and protesting against pollution and climate change.
