A self-taught artist, Tau Lewis uses complex methods of hands-on manufacturing like sewing, carving, and assemblage to create intricate portrait sculpture and patchwork quilts. Her practice finds its roots in healing from personal, collective, and historical traumas by means of work. Her creations make use of scrap materials found in Toronto, New York, and in Jamaica. Upcycling is a form of material recovery that is about action as well as memory. Portraits depict individuals in her own family as well as imaginary ancestors.
