TOSHIKO TAKAEZU

BORN
LIVES&WORKS
1922, Pepeekeo, USA
2011, Honolulu, USA

One of the 20th century greatest abstract artists, Takaezu has developed a very personal artistic language coming from his Japanese and Hawaiian background which reaches its highest point in the “closed shapes” – rounded, spherical or cylindrical sculptures, decorated with expressionistic enamel applications – made of ceramic, a material that, thanks to the artist’s work, goes beyond the functional artisan tradition to attain the realm of fine arts.
