ZAO/STANDARDARCHITECTURE

WHERE Beijing, People’s Republic of China
PEOPLE Zhang Ke (b. Anhui, People’s Republic of China, 1970)

Since its founding, the studio has kept its distance from the frenzied relationship with media that characterizes too many of the younger generations of architects. Working extensively in the Himalayas, their practice focuses on simple, direct architecture that references Chinese traditional spatial concepts, though without imitating what already exists. Their goal is to inject new life into old spaces through a respectful, productive dialogue, using a reinterpretation of the traditional values found in old neighbourhoods: architecture that speaks to the history and the culture of its surroundings.
