“Not an ex-aequo between two equally-worthy films, but two films who both earned the 2023 Green Drop Award for the same reason. Two works of art that our jury considered complementary and contiguous”. With this words, the director of Green Drop Award explains the jury’s choice. This year, the award’s twelfth, the jury includes Simone Gialdini, Carlo Giupponi, Emilio Cozzi, Marta Macchi, and chair Bepi Vigna, who chose unanimously to award the prize to both Green Border by Agnieszka Holland and to Me Captain by Matteo Garrone. The two films both tell a story of migration.
Elio Pacilio is the president of Green Cross Italia, the producer of Green Drop Award. Pacilio says that “the merit goes to Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera for his choice to include such films in the main competition. Human migrations are a humanitarian and ecological phenomenon that these two movies contribute to explain in both their human and historical aspects”.
The award, recognized by the Venice Film Festival, has been assigned since 2012 to the film in the Main Competition line-up that best interprets “the values of ecology and sustainable development, with particular attention to the conservation of the planet and its ecosystem for the future generations”.
