Since the early twentieth century, regional dialects have been influencing the French musical discourse. Ravel’s Trio avec piano of 1914, with its Basque-inspired rhythm, is one such example, as is Mel Bonis’s Suite orientale of 1900, with its characteristic modal embellishments. Award-winning Trio Zeliha (violinist Manon Galy, cellist Maxime Quennesson, and pianist Jorge González Buajasán) investigates further the linguistic aspects of the musical epoch. Their concert for the upcoming Mondi Riflessi programme, due October 19, ranges from the east (the Suite orientale) to the west (Barcarolles by Benjamin Godard).
