In 1856, Jacques Offenbach ran an opéra-comique competition to promote his new theatre, Les Bouffes-Parisiens. Seventy-eight contestants wrote music for Le Docteur Miracle and the jury gave two ex-aequo first prizes to Bizet and Lecocq. Bizet’s piece premiered at Bouffes-Parisiens on April 9, 1857, only to virtually disappear until 1951. This piece by twenty- year-old Bizet shouldn’t be overlooked.
