Danish composer and Berlin resident Simon Steen-Andersen is unanimously considered one of the most interesting voices in the modern world of music, especially in the field of musical theatre, which is the theme of the upcoming edition of the Venice Music Biennale. Steen-Andersen’s multi-disciplinary approach allowed him to build a project that is quite fitting in the history of Venetian music, centred around Claudio Monteverdi. The Return is a piece on the actual places where historical Venetian theatres once stood – among the world’s first that were open to the public and key in the development of the genre of opera.
