A new commission for the altar of San Giorgio Church: two new paintings by Luc Tuymans (b. 1958), a Flemish painter among the most authoritative of his generation, commissioned by the Benedictine Community to temporarily replace the large canvases by Jacopo Tintoretto, The Last Supper and The People of Israel in the Desert, currently undergoing a conservative restoration sponsored by Save Venice. The works, inspired by images found in the artist’s travels memory, capture our attention with unusual tones, disorienting perspectives, and surreal atmospheres that contrast one another.
