Although influenced by the Renaissance, European modernism, and the avant-gardes, Zhang Zhaoying staunchly refused to adhere to a given style or genre, rather choosing to create an extraordinary synthesis between free technique and controlled painting. Zhang explores the cultural transformations and new social dynamics of globalization to ultimately question universal beauty and truth. Along an exhibition path comprising 26 pieces, the artist deconstructs and reconstructs traditional iconographies, weaving together past and present, tradition and innovation, developing a visual narrative that invites the viewer to a dialogue between different cultures.
