Covering two exhibition venues, the Canadian Pavilion at Giardini and a space at Magazzini del Sale 5, the Biennale project by Stan Douglas (Vancouver, 1960) uses a combination of photography and video installation to draw a parallel between the European revolutions of 1848 and the demonstrations for political change that shook several parts of the world in 2011 – chiefly the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and protests against austerity measures in the UK. Douglas’s reflections focus on the root causes of these conflicts and on the way they were portrayed by the media and handed over to history, privileging the limitless, pervasive power of social media.
