The fall of the regime in 1992 marked a profound rupture with the past in Albania. The population began to challenge the architectural legacy of that era and to reclaim public spaces as a way of asserting a renewed sense of individualism. More than thirty years later, Albanian architects now face both the freedom and the responsibility of defining new frameworks that safeguard vast untouched territories from short-sighted speculation. Fifty interviews conducted via Zoom provide the foundation for a video essay that explores the active role of architects in shaping the relationship between public and private space, and the formation of Albania’s emerging national identity.
