COVER STORY

“The film is an unconventional one. It is a sensual and emotional experience. The director’s ambition is clear: he wants the world to feel what it meant to be not only Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. It is the most daring, uncompromising, and feminist approach to her story.”
Thus Ana de Armas about Blonde, the much-anticipated film by Australian director Andrew Dominik in the main competition at Venezia 79, where she stars in the title role.

79. MOSTRA DEL CINEMA DI VENEZIA
Ninety years of Venice Film Festival, and the fourteenth edition with Alberto Barbera at the helm. Auteur cinema from all over the world, with splendid Hollywood contributions and the Orizzonti section giving an insight on the cinema
of tomorrow. For these reasons – and countless others – Venice is once again the world capital of film.
By strength of arms
REGATA STORICA
Venice celebrates the millennia-old tradition of Venetian Rowing in an amazing feast of sport and colour. The city gathers along the Grand Canal to celebrate the water cortege that will set the clock back in time for one beautiful day.
Playing with Fire
LA COMMEDIA UMANA
Ai Weiwei and Adriano Berengo, two stars of contemporary art, produced an exhibition at San Giorgio Maggiore Church that is all about millenary craftsmanship. Their visions materialize and sublimate in a large glass chandelier – The Human Comedy – an art piece of incredible com- plexity and splendour.
Already written… tomorrow
66. BIENNALE MUSICA
Composers and musicians experiment with the responsibility of creating the musical theatre of tomorrow after a respectful, creative revisitation of Venetian repertoire. Giorgio Battistelli and the Ars Ludi ensemble will be awarded the Golden Lion.
In the open air
TEATRO OPEN AIR

Blank slate for flourishing verses
EMILIO ISGRÒ
Edipo Re, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s yacht, docks at the Venice Film Festival temporarily rebranded as Isola Edipo, and turned into artwork by Emilio Isgrò, who decorated her sails with the 'cancellature' the artist is famous for.
