Donato Renzetti returns to head the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice as part of the 2022-2023 Symphony Season. The maestro, one of the most famous orchestra conductors of the Italian school, conducts the Sinfonia del mare by Gian Francesco Malipiero at the opening and, subsequently, the Messa di Gloria by Giacomo Puccini, which will be performed with the complicity of the tenor’s solo voices Saimir Pirgu and baritone Simone Del Savio. Choir Master Alfonso Caiani. The Symphony of the sea by Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882-1973) is part of the early works of the Venetian composer, it is in fact among the three symphonies, together with the Symphony of heroes and the Symphonies of silence and death, written between 1906 and 1910. The composition, in a single, large movement, is a sort of symphonic poem without an extra-musical program, except for a single word written in pencil on the manuscript: «navigando». Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) composed the Mass for four voices in 1880, on the occasion of his diploma in composition at the Istituto Musicale of Lucca. In his early twenties, he created a work judged to be original and surprising, in which we recognize the signs of the genius who would later pave the way for the young composer to enter the world of music. First performed in Lucca on 12 July 1880 and known as the Messa di Gloria, Puccini’s composition is actually a complete Mass articulated in the canonical six sections of the ordinarium missae: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei . Although an early work, Puccini held this Mass in such high regard that he later reused the themes of the Kyrie and Agnus Dei in the operas Edgar and Manon Lescaut.
