Japanese tragedy in two acts on a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was staged for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala on February 17, 1904 but was remodeled several times by the composer in the following years: from the musical point of view the work will in fact be proposed in the final version published in the printed score of 1907, presented in French in Paris in 1906 and in Italian in New York in 1907. The public will once again be able to admire the suggestive mise-en -scène of the work signed by the director Àlex Rigola taken by Cecilia Ligorio, with the sets and costumes of the Japanese artist Mariko Mori, in the staging produced by the Teatro La Fenice Foundation in June 2013 as a special project of the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The premiere on Saturday 10 September will be dedicated to the memory of Renata Tebaldi, as part of the events to celebrate the centenary of her birth, in collaboration with the Renata Tebaldi Foundation.
