The Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer), one of the most deeply cherished celebrations for Venetians, has its roots in the 16th century and continues today as an event that blends faith, tradition, and spectacle. The origins of the feast date back to 1576, when Venice was struck by a devastating plague that claimed more than a third of its population. To invoke an end to the scourge, the Venetian Senate vowed to build a grand church dedicated to the Redeemer as a symbol of redemption and gratitude. The architect Andrea Palladio was entrusted with designing the church, located on the island of Giudecca. The first celebration took place in 1577, after the construction of a temporary votive bridge of boats allowed citizens to process to the church site and give thanks for the end of the plague. Following Palladio’s death in 1580, the basilica was completed by Antonio da Ponte, who faithfully adhered to the original design. The church was officially consecrated in 1592, and since then, the festival has been held annually on the third weekend of July.

Today, the Festa del Redentore is an event that combines spirituality with popular festivities and unfolds in two main parts. Saturday evening the city comes alive with a grand celebration on the lagoon. Boats decorated with colorful lights and garlands gather in the Bacino di San Marco and along the Giudecca Canal, becoming gathering points for families and friends. Traditional Venetian dishes such as sarde in saor and pasta e fagioli are enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. The highlight of the evening is the magnificent fireworks display, which lights up the sky above Venice, reflecting off the lagoon and creating a magical and unforgettable ambiance. Sunday is dedicated to solemn religious observances. The traditional Votive Bridge of Boats is constructed, connecting the Zattere to the island of Giudecca, allowing the faithful to make a pilgrimage to the Church of the Redeemer. The bridge is 330 meters long, made of wood and steel, consisting of 16 floating modules anchored by poles and supported by 34 boats. The day concludes with historic regattas that celebrate the maritime traditions of the Serenissima. The first race involves young rowers on pupparini, sleek two-oared boats. This is followed by a race of men on the same type of boats, culminating in the gondola race – a true test of physical strength and skill. The course runs from the Redentore along the Giudecca Canal, through the Fusina Canal, and back, finishing near the Church of the Redeemer.

The Festa del Redentore represents a moment of unity and gratitude, where past and present are intertwined. It is a special occasion for Venetians, who participate with great enthusiasm, and for visitors, who can experience the authenticity and timeless magic of a Venice illuminated by colors and tradition.
