On the centenary of his death, Gabriel Fauré is celebrated by Palazzetto Bru Zane in the company of artists who were his students. Seven concerts and a conference highlight a composer at the antipodes of convention, despite being the leader of an entire generation of musicians. A disciple of Saint-Saëns at the Niedermeyer School, he expressed himself first and foremost in avant-garde concerts, in churches and salons. In a France torn apart by the Dreyfus affair, he represents both a compromise and a new way forward. His influence as a professor of composition deserves to be revisited: it involves notable musicians, from Nadia Boulanger to Maurice Ravel via Florent Schmitt, Georges Enescu and Charles Koechlin. Following the presentation on Thursday, March 14, followed by a concert featuring Lorène de Ratuld on piano, the inaugural concerts will bring together two genres dear to the composer renowned for the delicacy of his chamber music. On Saturday, March 23, the Quatuor Strada and Simon Zaoui will perform works for strings and piano by Gabriel Fauré and Jean Roger-Ducasse-one of his most faithful pupils-while on Sunday, March 24, Cyrille Dubois and Tristan Raës will reveal Fauré’s mastery of the art of mélodies and his influence on such prestigious pupils as Maurice Ravel and innovators as Florent Schmitt.
