Venezia Jazz Festival – Fall edition will open on October 1 at the Sale Apollinee, Fenice Theatre, with German pianist, composer, and singer Olivia Trummer, the winner of prestigious Baden-Württemberg Jazz Award. Trummer employs her creativity to evoke a unique, intensely poetic universe in a duo concert with drummer Nicola Angelucci: Dialogue’s Delight.

Also at Sale Apollinee, on October 8, is the concert by Tingvall Trio, the avant-garde award-winning German band that looks at pop music to address a diverse, transversal audience. Martin Tingvall (Piano), Omar Rodriguez Calvo (double bass), Jürgen Spiegel (drums) will present their studio album Beat, bearing the distinctiveness of a sound that earned their reputation as the ambassadors of German piano jazz. Auditorium Lo Squero is run by Fondazione Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore Island, and will host the Band’Uniòn project on October 15. The project is a creation of Daniele di Bonaventura, one of the most important Italian bandeonists, Marcello Peghin, playing a ten-stringed guitar, Felice Del Gaudio, double bassist, and Alfredo Laviano, drummer. Band’Uniòn embraces jazz, tango, and improvisation. For the first time, Candiani Groove will be part of the Venezia Jazz Festival programme. The Centro Culturale Candiani, in Mestre, has been securing for itself very interesting neames on the Italian and international scene. Due October 20 is a concert by João Bosco, for over forty years one of the most beloved figures in Música popular brasileira and a virtuoso guitarist. Thanks to his long and fruitful collaboration with songwriter Aldir Blanc, his synthesis of jazz, samba, African rhythm, and Arabic culture captivated the interest of many great vocal interpreters. One name above all: Elis Regina. Back at Fondazione Giorgio Cini, French bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons will play on October 29 together with lutist Claire Antonini.

The two will present Farangi, the union of their experiences and passions for jazz and ancient and oriental music. A young musician boasting quite a career already, Emmet Cohen represents the nouvelle vague of modern jazz. He will play with his trio at Fenice Theatre on October 31. Again in cooperation with Candiani Groove on occasion of the hundred years since Charles Mingus’s birth, band Quintorigo dedicate a tribute to the American Genius with a live show on November 26. The concert will see the participation of Gino Castaldo, journalist and musical critic as well as one of the few living persons who met Mingus. At Sale Apollinee on December 9, the visionary South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini will present his jazz – a mix of mystic modernity and ancestral religious rites. Venezia Jazz Festival Fall Edition also includes the Tomorrow’s Jazz programme, an award for young talents of Italian jazz. Ten finalists will play at Sale Apollinee, either solo or in group, to win a scholarship and a place on an international concert stage. Auditions will take place on December 9. The Laguna Libre is Venice’s own jazz clubs. Among its guests will be Nagual 4et (October 7), Helga Plankensteiner and her quintet (October 14), Javier Girotto and Marea (October 21), and Larry Grenadier and Rebecca Martin (December 16). Grenadier worked with some of the most influential jazz players, from Brad Mehldau to Pat Metheny. The artist will also hold a two-day workshop (December 17-18).
