(2022, USA, 102')
What is to be found in a murderer’s past? What traumas can affect so radically the placid, affable soul of a person? Honest questions for viewers that want to see clearly what’s the story with Pearl, the elderly nymphomaniac serial killer and the protagonist of X (2022). Ti West used a whole prequel to answer these questions, and now changes track completely: while X was clearly a return to what horror and porn looked like in the Seventies, Pearl takes a step back, to the Fifties and cinema transitioning from silent film to talkies.
A versatile producer, Timon West (b. 1980) begins his education in the arts at the prestigious New York School of Visual Arts. He later decides to pursue film, working as a screenwriter, editor, director, and cinematographer. His passion is horror, a genre he contributed revitalizing thanks to his successful films The House of the Devil and Cabin Fever 2 (both 2009), The Innkeepers (2011), and The Sacrament (2013), inspired by the real-life 1978 Jonestown mass murder.
