Today, Paul Schrader (a Festival’s habitué since his 1997 participation with Affliction) will be awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. He is in Venice with Master Gardener, starring Sigourney Weaver. Public and private alternate in the main competition, with Argentina, 1985, a story of two lawyers investigating the crimes of the military junta, and Monica, a film on a tormented mother/trans daughter relationship by Andrea Pallaoro. Transsexuality also has a place in Casa Susanna, the third instalment of a trilogy on the subject by French director Sébastien Lifshitz. Also in the Venice Days programme is Blue Jean by Georgia Oakley, a film on the raging homophobia of Thatcher-era Britain. Zeina, the protagonist in Nezouh by Soudade Kaadan, is the allegory of difficult female emancipation in war-torn Syria. On the same side of history is Ismaël, a young man who fights for justice after the wrongful death of his brother had been covered up by officials in the French Army in For My Country (Orizzonti) by Algerian director Rachid Hami.
