A myriad words and miles of film, fiction and non-, have been spent on Marilyn Monroe. Fifty years since her death, Andrew Dominik set out to explore, more than the myth of Marilyn, Norma Jeane’s inner life in his latest feature film, Blonde, starring Ana de Armas. The film builds upon Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, also titled Blonde. From Iran, also in the main competition, is the third feature film by Vahid Jalilvand (Orizzonti Award for Best Direction in 2017 for No Date, No Signature): Shab, Dakheli, Divar (Beyond the Wall), a modern parable on disability, solitude, and maternity. In the Orizzonti section, Trenque Lauquen by Laura Citarella, starring Laura Paredes, is the story of Laura (yes, there’s three of them), who has mysteriously disappeared off a town in the Buenos Aires Province. Out of Competition, Dry by Paolo Virzì.
